Brothers first and little athletes second, Holroyd duo eye success

JOSHUA Cetinic is a sprinter, long jumper, cross-country runner and a soccer player – but most of all, he’s a big brother.

The nine-year-old competes at state level for the Holroyd Little Athletics Club and ahead of the start of the 2017-18 season, is already in training for the state multi-event competition in Wagga Wagga next year.

Juggling sports is a difficult task, but he still has plenty of time to help coach younger brother William, 7.

“Joshua does share all his tips with Will and often gives his little brother a pep talk before a big race to let him know that he has his full support and encouragement,” father Allen Cetinic said.

“They are best mates that choose to help each other in their individual sporting endeavours, rather than compete against each other.”

The multi-event is a tough test for any athlete, taking in a 200m sprint followed by 60m hurdles, 800m race, long jump, shot put and discus.

Under the watchful eye of coach Shanna Mahony and dad Allen (who was also a state athletics star back in the day), the aspiring athlete isn’t ruling anything out – keeping his options open to pursue other events such as cross-country or sprints as well.

“Joshua’s focus is on building lifelong friends in his sport,” Mr Cetinic said.

“The sport provides so many opportunities to compete and travel throughout the summer, and this means catching up with friends on competition days.”

Joshua has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star Individual award.
