Tiahna Skelton claims 17 year old record

Wallsend Little Athletics Club member Tiahna Skelton continued her strong form this season by claiming a 17-year-old national meet record twice on the one weekend.

Competing in the under-13 girl’s 200 metre hurdles at the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Sydney recently, Skelton stopped the clock at 27.94 seconds to win her heat before backing up that performance with an even better 27.74s to claim the final.

She eclipsed the previous mark, of 28.24s set by Tahlia Gray in 2000, by 0.5s.

Skelton, who represented NSW at the Australian Athletics Championships in March, also collected silver in the 80m hurdles and another gold in the 4x100m relay team on April 22-23.

Skelton and fellow Hunter athletes – Imogen Petrie, Montana Monk, Ethan McLoughlin and Ashlyn Blackstock – helped the NSW under 13s clinch the Trevor Billingham Trophy for the best overall point score. The hosts finished on 804, which was 105 clear of nearest rival Queensland.

Eastlakes’ Blackstock nabbed gold in the shotput and bronze in the discus.

Singleton’s McLoughlin had the same medal combination but with gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 400m.

Macquarie Hunter pair Petrie (discus) and Monk (800m, 1500m) picked up three silvers between them.
