Multi-Class Competition

Guidelines - inclusion of athletes with disability Featured Image

Little Athletics is about having fun and to ‘BE YOUR BEST’.  Little Athletics develops children of all abilities, providing a positive and inclusive environment.

We aim to provide an environment in which barriers to participation are removed and people with disability feel welcome and comfortable to join.

Multi-Class is the terminology used in Little Athletics, here are some other terms you may hear

  • AWD - Athlete with disability
  • CWD - Children with disability
  • Para ambulant - Athlete able to compete standing
  • Para-Athlete – Athlete with disability (para means beside or compete alongside)
  • Seated athlete – Athlete competing seated or in a wheelchair

Centre Level Participation

Athletes with disability will usually be fully included in the standard program. Discuss with your local Centre what is planned for their program and the structure of the facilities and whether modifications may be needed so your child can participate safely and fairly.

If needed, a Little Athletics Centre can modify the rules or equipment so athletes can participate.

For more information on modifications plus resources to include athletes with disability, please see our Inclusion Hub.

Classification Information for Athletes

At Centre level there is no requirement for an athlete to be classified, however some State based Member Associations may require classification for entry in to competitions beyond Centre level. Please contact your State Office for further information on this.

If you do want to compete in the Multi-Class competition, there is a process to follow to get a classification.

Visit Multi-Class Classification to learn more about classifications.

Classification Information for Volunteers and Officials

Check out our webinar discover how to support athletes with disability to access the Multi-Class competition.

Modified Throwing Weights

Classified athletes may have different throwing weights than athletes who are not classified. These weights are used for competition at a higher level than the Centre level. Modifications to throwing weights should be made at Centre level to cater to the athlete's ability.

Modified throwing weights are included in the Standard Events and Specifications.
