James Turner is one of Australian’s most successful Paralympic athletes, having won 7 x World Championships titles (T36 200m, 400m, 800m, London 2017; T36 400m, 100m, Dubai 2019 and T36 400m, 100m, Paris 2023), 2 x Paralympic Gold Medals (T36 800m, Rio 2016 and T36 400m, Tokyo 2020), a Paralympic Silver Medal (T36 100m, Tokyo 2020) and is the current World Record holder for the T36 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

James started at Little Athletics at the age of 8 at Forster/Tuncurry Little Athletics in NSW with the goal of being his best. He was born with Cerebral Palsy, which affects his balance, coordination, strength and flexibility but participating in sports, such as Little Athletics, really helped his physical development. He met his coach, Brenda Smith, who introduced him to para-athletics and opened the door to other Paralympic sports. After years of training, James went on to represent Australia in two sports, first in para-football for the Pararoos and then in athletics in the T36 800m at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. “Rio was where I won my first gold medal and broke my first World record. I’ve always aimed to continue to improve further after that”.  James also received an OAM for services to sport in 2017 for his achievements in Para-football and Para-athletics.

James is based at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra with his coach Iryna Dvoskina with their sights set of performing well in the upcoming 2023 Paralympic Games in Paris and work towards his goals for the T36 400m and 100m.
