Kew Little Athletics to celebrate 50th Birthday

Three Olympians will be trackside to help the Kew Little Athletics Centre celebrate its 50th birthday and inspire the next generation of young athletes at Stradbroke Park in Kew East on Saturday.

Long jumper Brooke Stratton, middle distance runner Luke Mathews and shot putter Damien Birkinhead along with Little Athletics Victoria chief executive Anthony McIntosh will help Kew athletes and supporters mark this special milestone.

Life members, past and present members, supporters and athletes are invited to meet at Stradbroke Park for speeches at 8.15am, followed by the morning competition program that is set to finish at 11am.

Kew LAC president Mark Rice said the number of athletes at the centre had grown substantially since competition first started in 1967 at its former Victoria Park venue, then with just 42 registered boys and girls.

Kew athletes contest a regional relay in 2013.

Today, some 350 registered athletes compete at Stradbroke Park.

The centre continues to enjoy a great family atmosphere, with parents volunteering for duties

and many ex-athletes taking on coaching roles.

On Saturday, some of these coaches can enjoy time with guests as the Olympic trio take to the oval to encourage Kew’s budding young athletes.

The 50th birthday celebrations will also honour the contributions of many Kew LAC life

members and families who have helped get the centre to where it is today.
