LAA welcomes Heather Mitchell to the Board

Coles Little Athletics Australia announced the appointment of a new director at their General Meeting held on Saturday 23 October.

Heather Mitchell has been elected by the state and territory members to join the board of Little Athletics Australia (LAA).

Little Athletics Australia GM, Operations – Participation, Development and Projects, Andrew Johnston said “it’s an exciting time for Little Athletics in Australia. Being able to access the breadth and depth of experience and skills that Heather brings to the sport will be extremely valued”.

Heather has been heavily involved in the world of Athletics and in particular Little Athletics in NSW for over 30 years. She joined Port Hacking Little Athletics Centre when her two older children signed up, and been involved in many different capacities including: the Centre’s Officer for Officials, Team Manager, Secretary and President for 22 years, and has also become a Life Member of the Centre. She has also received LANSW Merit Award in 1992, and received LAWNSW Life Membership in 1998.

Heather’s passion is officiating, regularly attending Zone & Region Meets, Walk Judge at all Championships, and the Championship Manager at LANSW State Championships, as well undertaking the role of Southern Metropolitan Zone Officer for Officials for 16 years. Heather has not only officiated at LA events, but Senior Athletics events such as a track official at Commonwealth Games In Melbourne, Australian Walks Judge at the Commonwealth Games in New Dehli, India, as well as many Athletics Australia, Athletics NSW and International event. She was awarded Life Membership of Athletics Australia and Sutherland Districts Athletics Club.

Race Walking is Heather’s main focus, and has been involved as Little Athletics Walk Judges Coordinator, World Athletics Area Judge, Lecturer, President of NSW Racewalking Club, Vice President of Australian Federation of Racewalking Clubs Inc, and been the NSW Walk Judge for the past 30 years at ALAC.

Heather has a wealth of knowledge across all facets of the sport of athletics, with a keen interest and understanding of Little Athletics. Heather will be a valued member of the board, particularly leading into vote for the unification of the sport to become one National Sporting Organisation entitled Australian Athletics on December 9.
